Take it From a Teacher’s Kid

Your child’s teacher the hardest-working, most emotionally-involved, and most enrichment-oriented person in your child’s life other than you.

Take it from a Teacher’s Kid

My mom was a third or fourth grade teacher until well past the time I was out of college.  Every night she put in HOURS of extra time grading papers at our kitchen table, worrying about the students in her class, trying to figure out how to approach parents about trouble at home, or just WORKING.  There were a ton of Christmases where she bought gifts that she knew couldn’t be provided for her kids – pads of paper, pencils, school supplies, even shoes.  (True story – one heartbreaking year she had a student whose mom could only afford to give her son HER hand-me-down tennis shoes.  That little boy got a brand new pair of sneakers from “Santa” that year.)

Whether or not you agree with standardized testing, the Common Core methodology, or belong to a home-schooling co-op, you can be certain of one thing: your child’s teacher wants your child to be loved, to be curious, and to be successful.

Every year, my mom would come home at the end of the year with a few apples, some mugs, and if she was lucky, a “Thank You” note from a parent that *got it*.  No matter what you do at the end of the school year, do SOMETHING to let your teacher know that you realize how important they’ve been in your life over the last 180 days!

Ideas for Showing Your Teacher Some Lovin’

Write that person an honest-to-goodness “Thank You” note!  With the modern technological age, a handwritten note becomes all-the-more meaningful!  Even better?  Have your kiddo practice those handwriting, grammar, and sentence structure skills that she’s been working on and write a note as well!

Gift cards, gift cards, gift cards!  BOOKSTORES, office supply stores, Amazon, teacher supply stores!  Your teacher pays out of pocket for an extraordinary amount of supplies throughout the year.  I’m sure she’d love some help in getting her room restocked for the next school year!

And, since you’re on this page, of course I’m going to suggest Jamberry.  I designed two sets of “Teacher Appreciation” nail wraps – perfect for a gift for a younger teacher that you don’t know a lot about!  You don’t need to know a size, whether or not they own their own place, or whether they drink coffee.  Add a bottle of sunscreen and a note and you have a wonderful token of appreciation for most important person (other than you!) in your kiddo’s life!

Check out how cute these are!

Montessori and Jamberry Nails – Match Made in Teacher Heaven

My daughter goes to the local Montessori school (I’ve raved about it pretty rabidly here before), and the end of the year is coming up.  Normally, I stress at the end of the year about teacher gifts that are personal and will actually get used.  This year, I have it.  FINALLY.  Amelia is super proud of her new writing skills, and since it’s actually “legible,” I’ll let her write the note thanking her teacher for an amazing year.  (In her own words, so who knows what it will end up saying).   But for the gift part….

Montessori and Jamberry Nails – Match Made in Teacher Heaven

Amelia’s teacher and her teenage daughter LOVE themselves some Jams.  Her daughter may be one of my best customers – and I LOVE when they show me pics to prove it!  Homecoming, Easter, Christmas – they seriously pumped up the Jams.  (Ha!) So for an end-of-the-year gift, I used Jamberry’s Nail Art Studio to create her very own design, filled with pictures from her classroom.

Ms. Chiste's Class

One of the things about Montessori is all of the beautiful materials and activities involved in every aspect of the child’s day.  From gorgeous colored beads for math, to flower arranging, and back to glass and ceramic objects for pouring, polishing, and art, the materials in the room make the classroom feel like the happiest place in town.

I LOVE the super bright colors!  The “paintings” in the design are Amelia’s “metal inset work;” the kiddos trace the shapes, learning pencil grasp, shape names, and get used to writing the curved and straight lines that they’ll need later on for writing letters.  Then if you’re lucky and give your teacher a big smile, she’ll let you paint the shapes with glitter watercolors.  (PS – The first few times Amelia came home she called them “Metal Insects,” which has STUCK like glue in our household as the name for the lesson!)

Sidenote: I’ll be writing about Amelia’s school quite often; it’s one of my top reasons for being in this Jamberry gig!  I love that I’m getting to help her (and her brother next Fall) get to go to this little school and be a part of the community that supports it!

Jamberry Fundraiser – All April Commissions Donated to Wheaton Montessori School!

A few of my favorite things are colliding this month:  my daughter, Jamberry, and Wheaton Montessori school.

This time of year, our little school, filled with amazing kids, holds an auction to help raise funds for school supplies, field trips, extra activities, and tuition help for underprivileged kids.  The school was founded by two sisters just a few years ago; their retired parents are now the greeters and work in the office.  It’s so nice knowing that my little kiddo has been taken in by a FAMILY to be nurtured, cared for, and guided during the day!

This little school has absolutely changed my little girl’s outlook, even at such a young age.  The diversity of the classroom has expanded her horizons and excitement about other cultures, she has a curiosity for the world around her that I envy, and the entire school is such an emotional support system not just for her, but for my entire family.  In short, we love our little school and want to help in any way that we can!

So for the month of April, my entire commission will be donated to the Wheaton Montessori School’s annual auction fund.  Please consider ordering under the party “Amelia’s School Fundraiser” on my site – you’ll get some great JamSwag, and Amelia’s school will get a little bit of a boost!
